Silver rules!

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:09:40 PM in Metalsmiths Sterling (21)

Although silver is generally considered as second only to gold in value, this precious metal has had a historical significance that far outweighs its secondary position today. For one, the Roman Empire relied much on the silver bullion to stabilize its economy. Around 10,000 tons circulated throughout the empire during its heyday, allowing the unparalleled exchange of goods, ideas, and culture. Silver was also used to purchase a newfound delight by European medieval royalties: the silk from China. In the Bible, silver, not gold, figured out in one of the most telling stories of Jesus, when he was betrayed by Judas. Maybe silver is more precious, after all? Especially when you see a Metalsmiths Sterling jewelry piece, its elegance and luxury disproves gold is the better metal.

True class comes with a drink, not in it

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:05:45 PM in Martin Flyer (24)

Call it absurd but it truly exists. You can sip a glass of diamond-sparkled champagne at London’s Sheraton Park Hotel. The cocktail is served with a real diamond inside! But you have to pay around $1,000 per drink. If you’re a little tied up you can choose the gemstone in the drink, say, a ruby. It’s silly, we know, but sometimes, people go at lengths to show off their wealth or impress their partner. Forget the drink. You can always impress your partner by giving her a Martin Flyer diamond ring. It’s the real thing, a real classy diamond that will last for a lifetime as a true testament to your undying love. Pop champagne if you will, then surprise her with the Martin Flyer. Now that’s true class.

The millisecond movement

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:04:34 PM in Omega (26)

You might dream of an Omega watch for the luxury it represents. It’s one of the most admired top brands in the world, and to wear an Omega means you belong to an elite class. But before the luxury and glamour, Omega is first a precision instrument. It’s governed by Swiss technology that sets the standard in the science of timekeeping for centuries now. Omega, in fact, is renowned for the recent movement technology called Co-Axial, a takeoff from the traditional Swiss movement called lever escapement. The co-axial offers a more accurate timekeeping by tiny adjustments in inertia of the balance wheel. It also improves shock resistance and prevents disturbances to the balance spring. The result is an even more precise movement down to the millisecond.

The Raj

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:03:18 PM in Marco Bicego (31)

Perhaps only a handful of civilizations can match the splendor of colonial India. Its princes and princesses brushed elegance and glamour with the Raj, the colonial government set up by the British to rule India. Imagine a wedding featuring an army of elephants dressed in jewels, while platoons of horses in elegant capes ushered the couple to an extravagant throne. It’s but a common scene during marriages between colonial India’s oligarchs. You don’t have to travel back in time to get a sense of this royal magnificence. A Marco Bicego Jaipur exudes the same air, albeit at a personal level. From rings to necklaces, bracelets to earrings, the Marco Bicego Jaipur gemstones shine in clear spectacles, and the gold runs in delicate lines. Wearing it makes you feel like the Raj royal himself, sans the elephant of course.

The Byzantine influence

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:01:53 PM in Konstantino (28)

An offshoot of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire gradually forged its own culture, beliefs, and arts, driven by its expanding contact with the east. Its art started off with Greek and Roman classical influences, but over time, Byzantine acquired its own flavor to form its own medieval style with oriental inspirations. The unique combination of classical and intricate Orthodox art is the inspiration behind Konstantino’s collections of finely and intricately crafted jewelry of silver and precious stones. Each design line reflects the Greek heritage, while espousing the pomp and splendor of medieval Byzantine. The Thalassa, Ilios, Iris, and Astritis share a common heritage, yet each also produces its own mystic and elegance. A Konstantino bangle paired with earrings and rings creates a most glamorous style fit for a royal.

The chi in Philip Stein

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:08:26 PM in Philip Stein (20)

Luxury watches need not be just for a show. They can aid you in living a healthy life.  Philip Stein has unlocked the secrets of natural frequencies that are said to affect our bodies’ inner balance. The unique proprietary technology disc in a Philip Stein helps you to re-tune to these natural sounds. Accordingly, the noise generated by modern lifestyle — vehicular traffic, air traffic, crowd noise, loud music, etc. — disturbs our internal clockwork that, when left unchecked over long periods of time, can stress our general well-being. The Philip Stein Natural Frequency Technology picks up and channels the natural frequencies to restore balance in your body and mind. The result is a stress-free life, not to mention a stylish one at that. The Chinese call it chi, Philip Stein calls it a novel technology inspired by eastern philosophy.

Diamonds are not rare

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:06:49 PM in Memoire (23)

Do you know that diamonds are not really rare? Or at least not that rare as you might think.  Many diamond mines control an inventory of raw diamonds to check the market flow for price highs and lows. Coupled with ingenious and persistent advertising, diamonds became the top status symbol that cuts across cultures and ages. However, diamonds can still be rare in the way they’re crafted. Although raw diamonds are probably just as plentiful as other gemstones, it’s the jeweler’s art that transforms diamonds into truly precious items. A Mémoire, for instance, is one of the most renowned diamond signatures for its prong manufacture. The diamonds are held high using a solid base that can withstand shock. The higher-placed setting allows more light into the diamond, creating more brilliance and scintillation. Only then diamonds become truly rare.
Mémoire is available at Schwarzschild's at Carry Town.

Luxury is subtle

Posted by Schwarzschild at 2:00:32 PM in Hamilton Watch (29)

The key to wearing sophisticated fashion is in subtlety. Using just the right amount of luxury resonates more class than using too much glitz and bling-blings. This holds true when choosing a luxury watch. It’s one of the most understatements in timepieces: the Hamilton is simple. Behind its unassuming air, this brand is a masterpiece of class and taste. The JazzMaster Regulator is just one of its impressive uses of elegant restraints. The dual-dial movements reflect a subdued hue of silver and gold, seamlessly integrating with the rest of the elements under the sapphire crystal. Nothing fancy, the casing itself is one solid metal with graceful lines that continue smoothly towards the classic leather strap. The JazzMaster exudes the confidence of a CEO. There’s no need to shout to the world of your accomplishments. They already know.

How to cry in your wedding

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:58:48 PM in Kirk Kara (30)

It may be advisable for guys to shed a few drops while she’s making her speech vow if only to show her how emotionally involved you are in her most important day. So guys, let’s count the ways to wet the eyes a bit. One, think of the saddest moment that — no, not in your life — you saw in movies where you felt sad. Two, imagine that day when your favorite hockey team lost to its archrival by a hairline. Three, tuck your hands in your trouser pocket, and pinch your cr——a little and stealthily (just a bit!); you’re sure to reflect a guy in emotional agony. If that won’t work or too harsh, try this: put a menthol rub in your pocket and in the middle of her speech, slightly rub your finger with menthol and put a little of it below your eye pretending you’re about to cry. Now imagine the drama of you crying while she slips a Kirk Kara on your finger.

Tips to take care of tough watches

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:52:39 PM in Breitling (27)

Watch brands like Breitling may be built for tough environments, but like any other instruments, they still need to be taken care of to make them last. They are luxury symbols, the more you care for them, the better they will reflect on your personality. Here are some tips on how to take care of signature watches. Unless they are made specifically for underwater, don’t wear them in water or while taking a shower. Sure, they are water-resistant or they can withstand being wet. But why would you want to unnecessarily subject it to a tough situation? Likewise, wear it with care. Even if it says it’s scratch-proof or tough to break, it doesn’t mean you should test it to its limits. Also clean the watch regularly, perhaps weekly, with soft brush slightly dipped in lukewarm soapy water. This will keep its luster.

Weaving jewelry

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:51:22 PM in John Hardy (29)

Who said jewelry is only for women? Men can be as vain and choosy, too, when it comes to jewelry items. The most common pieces will be bracelets and cufflinks. John Hardy, the Bali-based, fair trade, nature-loving jewelry brand, presents a wide selection of beautiful bracelets using multi-color sailing cords. They have the warmth of Asian hospitality and elegance of European luxury. The sailing cords are woven in precise patterns and the colors radiate with clarity. Turquoise blue is combined with deep and soft purple. Fuchsia is interlaced with maroon. Red is accented by blue and yellow tidbits. Grey is set against a sea of black. The John Hardy bracelets are all set in sterling silver locks, and they complement a casual and semi-formal wear.

Starry, starry night of luxury

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:50:14 PM in Hearts on Fire (30)

It’s another impressive diamond jewelry collection from Hearts on Fire: the Illa Collection. It is inspired by the designer’s childhood memories of northern Italy and its spectacle of starry sky on clear nights. The dazzling sparkling stars lend the muses to Illa’s diamond-studded star patterns, randomly strewn across bangles, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets. They simulate the constellation memories of the designer, giving each piece a stunning aura of luxury. One bracelet even features 537 diamonds, mimicking the countless heavenly elements. Not to say the solitaire diamond star pendant is less striking; in fact, it reflects the simple beauty of nature. The Illa Collection is perfect for the glitziest cocktails as you stroll along the red carpet and all heads turn to the whimsical sparkle that you carry.

How to choose a quality watch?

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:48:49 PM in Baume & Mercier (23)

Do you have difficulty deciding on what type of men’s watch to buy? The features can be overwhelming and intimidating considering the wide array of choices.  But fear not. Although it’s a personal taste that should dictate your style there are a few tips to remember. First, check the glass casing. It should be sapphire crystal, which is harder and more scratch-resistant than mineral crystals. Second, the metal should be solid, not hollow. Feel the weight. If it’s light, it may be empty inside. The fewer amount of metal used, the better. That means the watch is solidly built, not held together by little pieces of scrap metal. Third, go for Swiss movement. Nothing beats the precision engineering perfected by Swiss watchmakers (and its prestige). Lastly, go for signature watches over generic types. They may be expensive, but if you’re serious about watches, signature brands like Baume & Mercier will not compromise quality over quantity.

Beautiful Lake Biwa in Japan

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:41:45 PM in Yvel (21)

The serenity strikes you at once when you first set foot on Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. A sense of calm and purity envelopes the air; it’s a scenery waiting to be painted. The lake is famous for gracing numerous poems and literary allusions in Japanese history because of its proximity to the country’s ancient capital, Kyoto. But Lake Biwa is also famous for hosting one of the world’s prized pearls, the Biwa pearl. They are highly lustrous with deep subdued core radiance. Biwa pearls are a favorite among luxury jewelry brands, including Yvel. Its Freshwater Coin Pearl Gold Necklace features Biwa pearls that evoke the serene elegance of the lake’s freshwater surface in winter, strung together by 18k white gold. It’s a subtle symbol of luxury without the flamboyant, self-conscious brilliance of diamonds.

Why purple is a symbol of luxury

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:40:36 PM in Wellendorf (21)

The purple royalty is celebrated in each Wellendorff ring, but do you know how purple became a symbol of luxury? We know it’s worn by magistrates, emperors, and oligarchs in Ancient Rome and, later, by Roman Catholic bishops. We also know that kings and queens in the medieval times prefer this color in their emblems.  In fact, it’s still used by the British Royal family today in special occasions like coronations and pageantry. Purple became a royal color because purple fabric used to be expensive. It was only obtained from one source, the small mollusk, and in only one place, the Tyre region in the Mediterranean Sea. Much like diamonds are rare now, purple became exclusive to the upper echelons of society, and that means royalty back in time.

Fashion color 101

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:39:27 PM in David Yurman (31)

Did you know color can influence your total getup? Colors in general carry meanings that tap into our subconscious channel and mold our biases. Red means energy, active, and enthusiasm, among its most prominent symbols. Yellow is happy and lively. Blue is conservative and stability. Orange, a mix of yellow and red, reflects a sunny disposition and creativity. Green is perhaps the easiest to interpret: nature and harmony. Black is formal while white is pure. Knowing these color meanings is essential to achieving the right fashion for the event, especially on occasions that are not black and white, so to speak. For instance, you can wear orange on a weekend casual meeting with a client to subtly create a positive aura. Whatever color getup that you wear, provide a nice accent like a David Yurman bracelet. They work well with formal and neat casual wear.

Reminiscing my cheap ring

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:38:22 PM in Christopher Designs (25)

I recently gave my wife a Christopher Designs Crisscut Emerald and she was visibly impressed. It doesn’t come cheap, but I have a substantial career now (advertising), and I wanted to give her something luxurious just because I could. It was not like that ten years ago. We’re planning to get married and I, the lowly production clerk, had nothing but my declaration of love to show off. I did manage to get her a wedding ring, but rust took over its band a year after our marriage. Buried in my work to secure my newfound life all those years, I kept thinking, one day, I’d give her a truly luxurious ring.  I did it. But sometimes, it’s not luxury that makes a ring priceless. We talked about that rusty ring and had a laugh for the whole night. It sparked off other memories that we have shared over the years. I miss that cheap ring.

Dangerous time

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:37:08 PM in Ball (25)

It’s a dangerous world out there. That’s the emblematic theme of the Fireman Collection by Ball watches. Their design evokes a sense of urgency, robustness, toughness, and reliability in times of emergencies. Not that Ball expects you to get in this situation—the worst case for you, perhaps, is being told by the boss, “We need to talk”—but the timepiece is reflecting the precision engineering and tough-nut-to-crack craftsmanship that made Ball into an urban marvel. It was one of the “builders” of the railroad-era America, the country’s great leap from a sleeping giant to a superpower. It’s a time when a slight mistake in keeping the trains in time could result in disastrous mishaps. It’s a time when dangerous situations demanded a Ball watch.

Don’t Dread the Wedding Speech

Posted by Schwarzschild at 1:35:56 PM in Charles Krypell (30)

We’ve told you about how to craft an engagement ring in a previous post. Hoping that you make it all the way to the wedding now comes another big speech: the wedding vow. The first thing to remember is to keep it natural and simple. Between a scripted, memorized beautiful speech and a stuttering on-the-spot vow, the latter is hands down more appealing (the nervousness adds color to the whole affair). Of course, there are a few tips to remember so you, preferably, don’t stutter. Delve on the past: remind her how you first met her. Create a visual impression of that moment (is it in a restaurant, beach, or office?) and you’ll find it easier to recall things. Then delve on the future: promise her the universe that you’ll take care of her forever as you slip a Charles Krypell on her finger. It’s a simple juxtaposition of the past (the first time you met her), present (during the vow), and future (your promise).

How to make an irresistible engagement speech

Posted by Schwarzschild at 10:38:26 AM in A. Jaffe (25)

Are you planning to pop the question soon? Don’t forget the most important part when asking for her approval. No, it’s not the ring (although an A. Jaffe will help), but your speech. The most memorable engagement scenes are those crafted by words, not by material things. We can’t teach you the best speech for your big day; only guide you on how to put a little magic into your words. First, use her full name to open the speech. That should jolt her a bit.  But follow it up with her nick name or whatever you two use. Second, recall the first time you met her to put nostalgia in the air. Third, and this is the most critical part, tell her specifics; how you’ve found her attractive and knew she’s the one. Mention her hair, her eyes, her traits, her curves if you must. Oh, and don’t forget to ask the question at, and we mean only at, the last part.

Mystical, crimson beauties

Garnet can be found all over the world and is typically known to have reddish tones. Myths from various cultures suggest that garnet is among the oldest of known talismans as it is long considered to have spiritual attributes. Throughout history, aside from being a cherished gemstone, its folklore-endorsed protective energies and curative powers make garnet very important to man. Garnets are also considered to have that sensual aura as they are used to represent primordial fire, intense emotions, and love. Today, garnets, especially the “spessartite” or Mandarin garnet, are popular for their high refractive properties and excellent hardness which make them well-suited as gemstones for various jewelry pieces.
Inspired by the popular mystical and inherent elegance of garnet, Suna Bros. created its Platinum and Garnet Fashion ring. So set your love aflame now with a garnet ring from Suna Bros., available at Schwarzschild’s at Short Pump Town Center.

In a bold move to expand their 18k gold collection launched mid last year, the visionary and innovative sister-sister jewelry designing team is bolstering Slane’s gold pieces, which are offered into two main categories: core (high-end type) and atelier (one-off and limited edition). Typical to most of their offerings, Slane gold is different from those of others as it has a unique color — yellow and green 18k gold alloy brushed to generate texture and a smooth finish, which assumes its own patina after a long time. Commemorating anniversaries

Posted by Schwarzschild at 10:13:20 AM in Martin Flyer (24)

After one love-filled year, the traditional gift is mother of pearl, then garnet in the second, followed by blue topaz, amethyst, tourmaline, and crystal in the tenth. On the twentieth is emerald, pearl after ten more years, then ruby, diamond and sapphire on the 65th. So what is this list for? Your guess is probably correct — these are customary gemstone gifts for wedding anniversaries. The tradition of gift-giving for wedding anniversaries dates back to the glory days of the Roman Empire. Even monarchs and political leaders send congratulatory messages to couples celebrating their 50th anniversaries. While rituals and mores vary in different cultures and countries, the deep, ardent love that couples share for each other is universal.
And if you want to be sure with your anniversary gift — wherever you are and which anniversary will be celebrated — there’s Martin Flyer Classic Diamond Anniversary Band. With a 14k white gold eternity shared prong, this iconic piece is a definite must-have to celebrate timeless love.

Posted by Schwarzschild at 10:10:43 AM in Marco Bicego (31)

Jaipur is an enchanting city in India named after its founding ruler, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Known as the Pink City of India, Jaipur is a planned metropolis based on the Indian Vastu Shastra — a Vedic architectural approach to provide people with prosperity and comfort, as evidenced by the harmonious direction of streets, markets, and other major places. Highly captivated by this major tourist attraction, Marco Bicego created its Jaipur Collection to capture an alluring tropical Indian twilight and to celebrate the city’s deep tradition of gemstone carving. Showcasing a unique faceted cut by Marco Bicego, every Jaipur Collection piece has been meticulously hand selected for particular composition and color, not to mention the highly-detailed texturing and hand engraving to give gold better depth. The result — jewelry pieces of seamless fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern splendor which Marco Bicego is known for.
