Why Panerai Watches Are Some Of The Most Coveted Ones In The World
Panerai is renowned for creating some of the most iconic and high-quality luxury watches in the world. Its distinct design and oversized cases are immediately recognizable, so it’s no wonder the brand is so emblematic.
Combining bold Italian design with legendary Swiss watchmaking excellence, Panerai creates timepieces which can only be described as works of art.
The legacy of Panerai
Panerai was founded in 1860, when Giovanni Panerai opened his watch shop in Florence, Italy. At that time, not only was Panerai a distinguished watch shop, but it was also the city's first watchmaking school, responsible for training some of the country’s best artisans.
Since then, Panerai has become synonymous with high-quality, luxury watches. Although Panerai is still present in Florence, the company has been handcrafting all its timepieces in Switzerland for decades.
The brand draws inspiration from the iconic diving watches Panerai made for the Royal Italian Navy in its early years and pays homage to its history by incorporating classic nautical design traits in all its timepieces - from bold cases and minimal dials to oversized luminous hands and elegant leather straps.
How Panerai watches are made
Panerai timepieces are crafted with painstaking precision and unparalleled craftsmanship. Every single watch is made up of a multitude of components, which require hundreds of manufacturing and assembly operations.
To achieve such excellence, Panerai timepieces are made by master watchmakers, combining traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology.
It takes hundreds of steps to create each Panerai watch, but this is what the one-of-a-kind creation process entails, in a nutshell:
The legacy of Panerai
First, the main section of the watch case is shaped, cut, brushed, and polished to perfection. Then, all the intricate mechanical movements are meticulously assembled by a master watchmaker. After that, the bezel and crown are added to the case, which it’s sealed to make it water-resistant. Finally, the movement is assembled inside the case
Lastly, the case is closed and the movement is tested.
After countless hours of meticulous work, the finished timepiece goes through the last and most rigorous phase of production: quality control, where it must pass several tests to assure the watch meets both Panerai’s timekeeping accuracy and water-resistance standards. Once the watch passes quality control, it’s shipped to Panerai stores and partner retailers, where the exquisite timepiece will meet its new, lucky owner!
Iconic Panerai watches
While the brand offers numerous watch models, all its timepieces fall into one of Panerai’s four iconic collections:
Luminor, Luminor Due, Radiomir, and Submersible.
While influences of its original Italian dive watch design can be seen through all collections, each one of them offers a
unique take on Panerai’s iconic heritage. Let’s look at what makes each Panerai collection unique.
Panerai Luminor
Arguably the most famous Panerai watch collection, the Luminor is iconic. One of the most recognizable watches ever made, the Panerai Luminor is inspired by vintage Panerai watches created in the 1950s.
This collection’s signature design trait is the large cushion-shaped case fitted with the iconic crown-guard, a semi-circular piece which protects the winding crown and offers optimal water resistance. The prominent crown guard has become synonymous with Panerai and makes the Luminor instantly recognizable by its distinctive design.
Though Luminor watches are largely time-only models, there are versions which include other features, such as GMT, chronograph, and more. The Panerai Luminor is available in a wide variety of case materials, such as stainless steel, carbon fiber, black ceramic, gold, and platinum.
Panerai Luminor Due
As a whole, the Panerai Luminor Due collection follows the same overall aesthetics of Luminor watches but features thinner and smaller cases, which provide the wearer with a more refined look and feel.
Faithfully inspired by the lines of the classic Luminor of the 1950s, the cushion-cased design fitted with the brand’s signature crown-guard makes the Luminor Due instantly recognizable.
Different from all other Panerai watches, the Luminor Due sacrifices water resistance in lieu of its refined design and thin case. While it’s still water-resistant, its resistance is rated at 30 meters, which is not as deep as other Luminor models.
Although there are several sizes to choose from, the Luminor Due has the smallest case of all Panerai watches, starting at 38 mm. This collection also offers a number of additional softer dial colors to suit a wide range of tastes.
Panerai Radiomir
The watches in the Panerai Radiomir collections were designed based on a prototype Panerai made for the frogmen of the Royal Italian Navy in 1936. Their defining characteristics include a large cushion-shaped case, large hands, oversized hour markers, and a winding crown without the iconic crown guards.
Without Panerai’s signature oversized crown guards on the side of the case, the Radiomir takes on a sleeker design which is more on par with dress watches, despite the collection’s roots as a military dive watch.
Radiomir watches come in a range of case materials, dial colors, and strap options. Although most watches in the collection are time-only, additional functions, such as GMT or Power Reserve indicators, are also commonly seen in Radiomir watches.
Panerai Submersible
While the Radiomir and the Luminor are inspired by vintage diving watches, the Submersible is Panerai’s modern dive watch.
Featuring a rotating timing bezel, a diver-style dial, water-resistance ratings starting at 100 meters, and the iconic Panerai crown-guard, the Submersible collection is the brand’s purpose-built dive watch.
Submersible watches feature oversized cases which range from 42 mm to 47 mm and are available in a wide range of materials, such as stainless steel, titanium, gold, and bronze.
